BREAKING NEWS

London’s Brixham Trawler, 'Kenya Jacaranda’, was successfully refloated this afternoon after sinking on her moorings at Tilbury Docks last Sunday.

The KJ team is now on board dealing with the effects of nearly one week under water and investigating the cause to prevent recurrence.

The incident underlines the need for urgent financial support to protect and preserve one of London’s historic assets.

NEWSFLASH

KJ sinks at Tilbury

Last weekend, the Kenya Jacaranda sank at her mooring in Tilbury Docks.

An attempt to raise her will be made on 8th January.

Now we need your help more than ever

See letter from David Isted - one of KJ's voluntary skippers.

The Kenya Jacaranda, an important and beautiful historic sailing ship, needs your help.

Built in 1925 as a Brixham sailing trawler, and with a proud history which includes the last-ever salvage tow of a commercial sailing vessel under sail and winning the coverted King George V Cup at Brixham Regatta in 1936, 'KJ' has spent the last 50 years providing sailing experience to young people. Alas, the passage of time has taken its toll both on the original charitable trust, the Mayflower Sail Training Society, and the condition of the ship. Time moves on and the original trustees wish to transfer ownership and responsibility after many years at the helm. Kenya Jacaranda Heritage Sailing, a new organisation, has been formed to continue and extend the work begun on the Thames in the 1950s.

Our aim is to impart something of the theory and practice of seamanship and to encourage teamwork. Crewing a large sailing vessel is a great experience and we hope that, as well as learning the differences between port and starboard, and barnacles and binnacles, the young people who sail with us will enjoy an inspiring and educational time on this beautiful ship.

Our first task is to acquire secure long-term ownership of the Kenya Jacaranda, carry out essential maintenance work and begin a further period of service to young people. We have formed Kenya Jacaranda Heritage Sailing to do this.
